WINTER FALLS by Nicole Maggi

Posted on

With all the holiday hubbub, I failed to post the announcement of the final Class of 2k14 book birthday! My apologies. If you want to read up on all of the books from the Class of 2k14, head on over to our official site. Lots of good stuff going on over there.

Congratulations to Nicole Maggi on the debut of WINTER FALLS!

About the book:

Alessia Jacobs is a typical sixteen-year-old, dying to get out of her small town of Twin Willows, Maine. Things look up when a new family comes to town, but when she falls for the hot, mysterious son, Jonah, her life turns upside down.

Weird visions of transforming into an otherworldly falcon are just the beginning. Soon she learns she’s part of the Benandanti, an ancient cult of warriors with the unique power to separate their souls from their bodies and take on the forms of magnificent animals.

Alessia never would’ve suspected it, but her boring town is the site of an epic struggle between the Benandanti and the Malandanti to control powerful magic in the surrounding forest.

As Alessia is drawn into the Benandanti’s mission, her relationship with Jonah intensifies. When her two worlds collide, Alessia’s forced to weigh choices a sixteen-year-old should never have to make.

WINTER FALLS is published by Medallion Press.

About Nicole:

Nicole Maggi knew she would be a writer since the 3rd grade, when she wrote a story about a rainbow and a unicorn who became friends, and her teacher chose it to read aloud to the class.  She took a detour into acting for many years, earning a BFA in Acting from Emerson College and performing in many off-off-Broadway shows during her decade in NYC.  Now she lives in Los Angeles with her husband, their daughter Emilia and two cats named Sawyer and Hurley.  She practices yoga passionately and will use any excuse to bake something elaborate…mainly so she can eat it as soon as it’s done!

FALLS THE SHADOW by Stefanie Gaither

Posted on

Today the Class of 2k14 celebrates another book birthday! If you want to read up on all of the books from the Class of 2k14, head on over to our official site. Lots of good stuff going on over there.

Congratulations to Stefanie Gaither on the debut of FALLS THE SHADOW!

About the book:

In a near-future world, a sixteen year old girl must decide what she believes and who to trust when her sister’s clone is accused of murder.

When Cate Benson was a kid, her sister died. Two hours after the funeral, they picked up Violet’s replacement, and it was like nothing had ever happened. Because Cate’s parents are among those who decided to give their children a sort of immortality— by cloning them at birth. Which means this new Violet has the same smile. The same laugh. That same perfect face. Thanks to advancements in mind-uploading technology, she even has all the same memories as the girl she replaced.

She also might have murdered the most popular girl in school.

Or at least, that’s what the paparazzi and the crazy anti-cloning protestors want everyone to think: that clones are violent, unpredictable monsters. Cate is used to hearing all that, though. She’s used to defending her sister too—against mean girls, against paparazzi, and now, if necessary, against these dangerous rumors. But then Violet vanishes, and when Cate sets out to find her, she ends up in the line of fire instead. Because Cate is getting dangerously close to staggering secrets that will rock the foundation of everything she thought was true.

FALLS THE SHADOW is published by Simon and Schuster.

About Stefanie:

After owning and co-managing a coffee shop for several years while simultaneously earning her B.A. in English, Stefanie Gaither left the small business world behind to focus on her author career instead. Now, in addition to penning YA novels, she also works part-time as a copywriter for an advertising agency. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and an incredibly spoiled Shih Tzu.

Congratulations to Amy Zhang on the debut of FALLING INTO PLACE!

About the book:

She was a little girl who wanted to be a hero, and the world turned her into a tragedy.

So far, Liz Emerson’s attempt at life has been somewhat catastrophic. She spreads rumors, she drinks, and she has a particular talent for ruining lives. And since the only way she knows how to stop is by ending her own, she crashes her car and makes it look look like an accident, certain that she’ll die and be forgotten.

Except. She can’t even do that right.

Narrated by Liz’s childhood imaginary friend as she watches over the broken and unconscious Liz, FALLING INTO PLACE tells their story in terms of countdowns, regrets, and Newton’s Laws of Motion.

WORDS AND THEIR MEANINGS by Kate Bassett

Posted on Updated on

Today the Class of 2k14 celebrates another book birthday! If you want to read up on all of the books from the Class of 2k14, head on over to our official site. Lots of good stuff going on over there.

Congratulations to Kate Bassett on the debut of WORDS AND THEIR MEANINGS!

About the book:

365 days ago, Anna O’Mally stopped writing, caused a death, and stole the identity of a 1970s punk rock poet, but now, family secrets and a new friend make her question if words like life, love, art, and truth can be redefined.

Anna O’Mally doesn’t believe in the five stages of grief. Her way of dealing with death equates to daily bouts of coffin yoga and fake-tattooing Patti Smith quotes onto her arms. Once a talented writer, Anna no longer believes words matter, until shocking discoveries– in the form of origami cranes– force her to redefine family and love.

As Anna goes in search of the truth, she discovers that while every story, every human being, has a last line, it might still be possible to find the words for a new beginning.

WORDS AND THEIR MEANINGS is published by Flux.

About Kate:

Kate Bassett grew up on a healthy dose of dirty brown rivers, loud music, and good poetry. She now lives in northern Michigan with her husband, three kids and one very old dog, and serves as the editor of her small town’s newspaper, where she gets to write about everything from creativity in schools to pet pig obituaries.

Congratulations to Lauren Magaziner on the debut of THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN WITCHES!

About the book:

Roald Dahl meets Eva Ibbotson in this hilarious middle grade debut perfect for reading aloud!

Rupert Campbell is fascinated by the witches who live nearby. He dreams of broomstick tours and souvenir potions, but Rupert’s mother forbids him from even looking at that part of town. The closest he can get to a witchy experience is sitting in class with his awful teacher Mrs. Frabbleknacker, who smells like bellybutton lint and forbids Rupert’s classmates from talking to each other before, during, and after class. So when he sees an ad to become a witch’s apprentice, Rupert simply can’t resist applying.

But Witchling Two isn’t exactly what Rupert expected. With a hankering for lollipops and the magical aptitude of a toad, she needs all the help she can get to pass her exams and become a full-fledged witch. She’s determined to help Rupert stand up to dreadful Mrs. Frabbleknacker too, but the witchling’s magic will be as useful as a clump of seaweed unless Rupert can figure out a way to help her improve her spellcasting—and fast!

The Only Thing Worse than Witches is published by Dial.
