The first professional review of WHILE YOU WERE GONE is out, and…

It’s good!

*big relieved-author exhale*

Kirkus calls the novel “tense and exciting throughout”, and says it’s “lots of fun on multiple levels”.

But what really made me happy about this review was what they had to say about the characters.

“Danny and Eevee have off-the-charts chemistry.”

“The nonromantic storylines—Eevee’s competition for a shot at a foreign art school placement and Danny’s quick immersion in his parallel self’s light rebellion via graffiti—allow the characters to develop outside of their romance.”

Huzzah! Strong characters, just like in NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE.

This totally made my day. Heck, this made my weekend.

Time to Break the Rules: A theme song for WHILE YOU WERE GONE

Posted on

So, I get in my car yesterday to pick up the kiddos from school and a song I’ve never heard before comes on the radio. It starts off with acoustic guitar and then some really cool chord progressions. I’m intrigued. I turn it up. Then the lyrics start, and I realize I’m listening to the perfect theme song for WHILE YOU WERE GONE.

The song is “Renegades” by X Ambassadors. Have a listen:

“It’s our time to make a move
It’s our time to make amends
It’s our time to break the rules
Let’s begin…”

819VTwVeSVL._SL1500_Yeah, that’s pretty much Danny and Eevee in WHILE YOU WERE GONE. In the parallel world, society is at a breaking point, and Danny and Eevee find themselves in a position to potentially push it over the edge. But at what cost?

The really mind bendy part about the song thing is that almost the exact same thing happened just before the first book, NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE, hit the shelves. I love when that happens.

If you’re interested in finding out what Danny and Eevee get up to in WHILE YOU WERE GONE, pre-order your copy today!

In other news, I wanted to let you know that in the coming days I’m going to be moving my blog to function as part of my actual website (amyknichols.com).  For too long they’ve been separate entities, and I think it’s time they play together. The transition should be seamless (fingers crossed). If you noticed a sudden change in format and appearance, you’ll know why. If you follow or subscribe to this blog, you should have no problems continuing to do so at its new location. Just a heads up.

As always, thanks for reading and coming along with me on this journey.

Mark a course for 2015. Engage.

Posted on Updated on

So…here we are.

2015.

Every year I choose a word that sums up my intention for the year. Last year, with my first book being published, I chose the word “launch”.

This year, with one book out in the world and another on the way*, my word is…

Engage.

en·gage (verb) \in-‘gaj, en-\

: to get and keep (someone’s attention, interest, etc.)

: to bring together and interlock <the gears engaged>

JLPOf course ‘engage’ makes me think of Jean-Luc Picard. Which makes me want to drink tea, Earl Grey, hot. And shave my head. No, wait. Not shave my head. But tea, yes. Always tea.

Anyway, my goal this year is to engage readers, both online and in person. Now That You’re Here has received really great reviews, and I’ve been getting emails from readers who have enjoyed it (which, seriously, is an author’s dream come true). Now it’s a matter of spreading the word that there’s a fun new science-y book out there that tweens and teens will enjoy. To do this, I need to engage with my audience. I began by redesigning my website, making it more me, and I’ve been setting up events where I can chat with readers.

First up is YAllapalooza at Changing Hands Tempe on January 24 at 4pm. It’s going to be so much fun! Hope to see you there.

In March, I’ll be down in Tucson for the Tucson Festival of Books, doing panels, signing and workshops. More on that soon.

Online, I’ll be blogging here (duh), as well as at the Parking Lot Confessional and YA Outside the Lines. The PLC is also continuing our geeky writing podcast, Curb Chat, which is so much fun, I can’t even tell you. Definitely check it out.

My other goal this year (and always) is to engage my creativity. My brain is brimming with ideas and my heart is full of hope of seeing more stories published. It’s time to put the pedal to the metal and get the gears turning. Or rather, the fingers typing.

So, without further ado, here’s to a great 2015!

Engage.

Make it so.

*While You Were Gone, the second book in the Duplexity series, will be published by Knopf on August 4! More news to come!

Wow. It has been a crazy couple of weeks. Warning: I’m about to say thank you A LOT.

NowThatYoureHere_AmyKNichols_smBefore I say anything else, I have to say thank you to everyone who helped me celebrate the launch of NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE in person and online. It was an incredibly fun launch, and I’m so grateful to all of you for helping make it so.

If you haven’t purchased your copy yet, you can do so at any of these fine booksellers. Thank you!

If you enjoyed reading NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE, please tell your friends! A lot of this business comes down to word of mouth. Please also leave a review online to help spread word that this book is a great read. I really appreciate your support. Thank you!

To celebrate the release of NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE, I held a party at the First Draft Book Bar inside the Changing Hands Bookstore’s Phoenix location. Soooooo many people showed up! The place was packed and the store ran out of books. They said it was their largest YA event to date at that location. So awesome!! Thank you!!

Then I zoomed over to San Diego to participate in the Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore holiday party, where I mingled with a dozen other authors and signed books. It was such a blast! I got to see fellow Class of 2k14 author Stephanie Diaz, and got to chat with the likes of Weston Ochse, Jonathan Maberry and Jeff Cohen. I also got to see the wonderful Maryelizabeth Hart, who I swear is a superhero whose mutant power is awesomeness. It was a dream come true to see NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE on the shelves there.

The next day I zipped back over to Arizona and met up with my mentor and friend James Sallis to have a conversation and book signing at The Poisoned Pen Bookstore in Scottsdale. Another full house, and another run on books. They sold out, too! It was a fun event with lots of Q&A’s with those in the audience. And again, so amazing to see NTYH included among so many books I’ve long admired. Dream come true. Thank you to everyone who came!

While I was running around to bookstores, things were happening online, too.

NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE was reviewed by the USA Today HEA blog and included in their Must-Read Romances.

It received a glowing review from the School Library Journal, and was included in their “What’s Hot in YA” winter list.

VOYA reviewed it, saying, “Think of the intrigue in Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series, softened by the romance of a Sarah Dessen novel.”

And Bustle included it in their December 2014’s Best YA Books: Stuff Your Own Christmas Stocking with These 9 Novels list.

In case you missed previous reviews, here’s what Kirkus and Publishers Weekly had to say about NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE. PW gave it a star!

My stops for the second week of my Rock Star Blog Tour included:
Page Turners Blog
Once Upon a Twilight
The Cover Contessa
The Best Books Ever
Me, My Shelf and I

I also did guest posts at Terribleminds, Adventures in YA PublishingAll the Write NotesYA HighwayWriter Writer Pants on Fire, and The Hiding Spot.

Finally, in case you missed it, here’s the very cool trailer for NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE:

Now, it’s Christmas and even though I’m ready for a nap, I’m lining up events and whatnot for the new year. It’s going to be exciting. I hope you’ll come along for the ride.

In the meantime, I have to say it again: thank you. This has been an amazing journey, and I couldn’t have done it without you. ❤
